Sometimes it can be hard to be a working American. Taking vacations and breaks sends the unspoken message that you don’t take your job seriously. “Productivity” and “synergy” are buzzwords that are thrown around conference rooms all over the country. We are constantly looking for ways to motivate out employees even more so that we can increase profit margins and help businesses grow. Turns out that a strong motivator was in front of us all along: pizza.
Pizza is one of those foods that is nearly universally liked. While there are some people who can’t actually eat pizza, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who claims to dislike pizza. Perhaps because of this universality, during a recent study, researchers found that pizza motivated their employees to work a little bit harder. In fact, pizza was found to be more of an incentive than other motivational tools, including money.
Just what is it about pizza that is motivating? Well, in the study done by Dan Aeriely mentioned earlier, groups of workers were split into two groups, one being the control group. The other group received messages that at the end of the week, if they increased productivity, they would be given either a small bonus around $30, be complimented by their boss, or given vouchers for free pizza. The control group was given no messages at all. By the end of the week, those with the pizza messages were more productive than their peers, although compliments were a close second.
If you’re looking to motivate your workers this week, tell them you’ll order them Pie In The Sky Pizza at the end of the week and see what happens!
